Hey, that is exactly what I do! Except my 6mm figures are not black undercoated they are primed white then given a wash of thinned dark brown. Works really well, IMO, as it instantly does the shield backs, spears, etc the right colour and if you are careful when painting tunics also does the belts! In fact I like it so much I might try in the next time I paint bigger figures too!

It is GW Blood Red over the top of GW Red Gore over black undercoat.
